About Me

I’m Tanya, a writer, explorer and mother of two, based in Zürich Switzerland. For a dozen years, I’ve been sharing the hikes, outdoor activities and other travel we’ve done in Switzerland and beyond through this website, building a wonderful community of other active families through social media.

It’s important to me that this blog documents a real experience, not a short generic overview that you can get on lots of other sites. We are not just a pretty picture. We give a personal account of each activity along with how to get there, what to expect, what’s special for families, what to avoid, and how to best use your time. We provide lots of practical details based on our experience that will help minimize the frustration and maximize the fun.

I also want to inspire you to try activities that you perhaps hadn’t considered doing with your kids. Switzerland makes it easy for people of all abilities to enjoy the outdoors and I want to be a part of the effort to get more people out there. I hope you find the blog helpful and have many happy adventures in Switzerland and beyond.

My origin story

In 2005, I moved from San Francisco to Zürich, Switzerland with my husband and one year old son. Like any transition, it was tough at first, but the beautiful Swiss landscape made it much easier to love where I lived. It took us awhile to figure out how to enjoy hiking and traveling with kids, but now it’s our favorite thing to do. It makes me happy that my two boys now excitedly ask “Are we going on a gondola today?” or “Are we building a fire for lunch?” I want my kids to love being outside and enjoy simple pleasures like picking wildflowers and throwing rocks in a river. So far it’s working.

I started this website with a few moms I met in a playgroup in Zurich. We wanted to keep track of all the travel tips the moms shared at the playgroup. Although lots of moms had great ideas, I was basically the only one posting them. Eventually, I took over the blog and made it into my own pet project. With over 400 posts of all sorts of family-friendly activities in Switzerland, you are bound to find something you like.

  1. Hi Tanya, I want to thank you so much for all the hard work and effort you have clearly put into this site. I recently traveled to Grindelwald with my husband and our two small children. Your website was our bible, and the details on the trails, which way to go, prices, etc, was a godsend. I felt like I had a personal guide for our vacation. Every single day of our trip we did something from this site, including multiple beautiful (and fun!) hikes, as well as going to a thermalbad when the weather turned on us. Our vacation was a clear hit, thanks to you and your hard work and dedication. My kids loved being outdoors so much, away from city life. I hadn't thought bringing the kids hiking in Switzerland was possible until I found your blog. Thanks and Keep it up!

  2. Such a great list of resources. I love that you share all of these things for making kids lives rich and full of new, outdoor experiences. It's also encouraging for people everywhere to remember to explore.

  3. Hi! I am so excited I have found your blog. It's fantastic. A big Thank You to you. We are possibly moving to Zurich around April from the Bay Area. I have two boys, a four year old and a one year old. I am so nervous about moving to foreign country. We are actually coming down in December to check it out. I would LOVE to meet you if you're not busy.

    Enjoy your day,

  4. Hello Tanya,
I came across your blog on Sunday when I was looking for some hiking possibilities nearby Grindelwald. My name is Hanka and as well as you I am a foreigner, living in Switzerland (but unlike you only for 2 years now) and I love making trips with my husband and our kids in the beautiful Swiss nature.
What I like about your blog is that is full of good recommendation and useful tips for active families. The map of hikes and activities is top!
As I mentioned above, it has been 2 years since we moved from the Czech Republic to Switzerland, canton Bern. That time I have been writing my blog http://www.adinajustina.blogspot.ch just for myself, but then I started to write about places we have been to. Partly for ourselves (kind of family log), partly for other families, who like to travel with kids and are looking for interesting destinations to go.
So if you happen to travel to more to the west of Zurich, you can check my blog for travel tips 😉
PS: I definitely put your blog url to my “blog roll” and I would be very happy if you could do the same.
    Have a nice day!

  5. This is amazing. Thank you so incredibly much. We moved to Zurich a year ago and have a 5 month old that I want to get out and about with. I can't wait to explore all of these places!

  6. Hi just found your blog while searching for the Stockengut farm in Kilchberg. Great site! I was just remarking to my wife, how there are loads of hiking events in Switzerland on meetup.com, but none that really cater for families with little ones. They don't answer the all-important questions: “Can I bring a buggy?”. “Will I die going up this trail if I have to carry my little guy in a carrier?”

  7. Hello Tanya. I am negotiating a job offer in Zurich after 14 years of living and working in Canada. I came across your blog while browsing the internet to look for something to do with kids in the Zurich area. I have a 8 year old son and we love the outdoors. I am scared to start in a new country but your blog made me feel positive and look forward to many beautiful things to see and do with my son.
Could I also bother you and ask you which school you have chosen for your kids? Thank you so much and enjoy the summer! Eva

  8. Hi Tanya,
I recently discovered your blog, and I want to thank you for all your great suggestions. It's a wonderful reference to enjoy Switzerland! I did the hike from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock after reading your post, and I had a very good time.
I wish you many other fun outings,

  9. This blog is just fantastic – thank you so much for all your hard work. Now I have a lot of places to try with my son and have a motivation to start driving again -:)

  10. Thanks for a great blog! My husband and I just moved to from Los Angeles to Zurich in January with our, now, 5 month old son. I'm a rock climber and my husband is a hiker. We look forward to venturing out to your recommended hikes.

  11. Dear Tanya. Thanks for a great blog! Since moving to Zurich a few years ago, I always come back here to see what news there is. And on another note, I have now started a soft play centre in Zurich, only 8 minutes walk away from the main station and would be super grateful if you could give us a mention here please! It's called Gigglehouse and you can find us at ZeOT, Lagerstrasse 107 8004 Zurich. The soft-play is suitable for babies and children up to and including 3 years old. We are currently open every Friday from 9:30 – 15:00. You can find more information at http://www.gigglehouse.ch. It is great fun and is one way to keep those babies and toddlers active during the winter months! Many thanks, emilie@gigglehouse.ch

  12. Hi Tanya! We're friends of Logan and Emily's from Palo Alto! We've just arrived to spend a year in Switz, over in Villars-sur-Ollon. We love your blog and have already learned so much from your amazing experiences and writing. Thank you!! Perhaps our trails will cross someday… We have 4 boys, ages 7, 7, 9, and 10. Thanks!! -Trina Currier

  13. Some recommendations for children on the other side of Lake Zurich. Park im Grüene in Thalwil and has a Kasperli puppet theater and a small train ride in the summer Planeta Magic in Wadenswil is a nice indoor play area which also has a party area for birthdays and such. Also recommend the Kids Club at the Holmes Place Gym also near Thalwil. As I recalled when we lived there, they had a special night every month when you could leave your child there and have a parents night out. I dont know if access to the Kids place is limited to members of Holmes Place.

  14. Hi Tania, i love the blog and always use it as refernce before we head out somehwere. Somewhere i notice you havent been to yet is Wirzweli which we're planning on going to this week.

  15. Hey Tanya, You are amazing. This blog looks great and providing lots of useful information. I loved it. Thanks for you efforts making this.
    Cheers, Javvaji.

  16. Tanya, I can not thank you enough for this website. It is truly making our time in Switzerland much more worthwhile. We have been in Zurich a little over a year from Milwaukee. We have a soon to be 3 year old daughter and a 6 month old and the FIRST website I go to when looking for things to do is yours. So far we've done Murren, Melchsee Frutt, Brunni, and Braunwald purely on your recommendations and loved all of them. Thanks so much for taking the time. Chris Moore

  17. Great job!!! I love the way you present your trips and also how well organized is your blog. Thanks for sharing with us some great ideas!
