Raten is small ski hill for locals, near Einsiedeln, with a large free sledding hill. It’s a good choice for families with little kids who just want to sled or are starting on skis. It’s close enough to Zurich that we’ll zip out there for an afternoon of sledding with the snow has already melted in Zurich. It also has a big playground with a zip line, winter walks, a horse-drawn sleigh, and a full-service restaurant.
This area is a small ski hill for locals, good for little kids and beginners. We like it mostly for it’s big sledding hill with plenty of room to spread out. The map below shows what’s available.
Getting to Raten
The ski hill is located at the top of Raten pass, next to Restaurant Raten. The address is Ratenstrasse 1 6315 Oberägeri, GPS: 47°08’30.2″N 8°39’50.6″E
By car: Drive to Raten pass. Park in the big parking lot next to the restaurant.
By public transit: Take a train to Zug, then a bus to Oberägeri, then a bus to Raten. The bus stop is directly across from the restaurant parking lot.
Directly behind the restaurant is a big sledding hill, free to use.
You can also walk along the groomed winter trail to more sledding slopes.
The sledding hill goes down the forest. There is no natural stop, so your kids will need to stop themselves before running into the trees.
There is a little ski hill with a disc lift.
Here are the ski list prices and opening times, also listed on their website. They rent also sleds for CHF 5. There is a kiosk next to the ski lift with snacks and hot drinks.
There’s also a big playground next to the restaurant. The zip line is certainly the most popular attraction. Our kids enjoyed it even in the snow.
Next to the ski hill is Restaurant Raten, which is a bit fancy and expensive for little kids. We went anyways with our unwieldy crew and had a nice time. The food wasn’t anything special, but we sat in a lovely sun room with huge glass windows overlooking the alps. This was a treat after sitting in the cold for a long time. On busy days, you might need to make a reservation.
