Zermatt & Valais Region: Favorite Family Hikes

We’ve spent two summer vacations in the Valais region of Switzerland, home of the Matterhorn. It gave us a chance to explore places that are a bit too far for a day trip from Zurich. Most places we visited in the Valais had lots of brochures detailing all the family-friendly activities. They make it really easy for you. But there are so many options, you might get overwhelmed. So here are our favorites to get you started, with links to my posts for more details.

1. Zermatt: Gornergrat

Take a cogwheel train up the mountain to a glacier overlook with excellent views of Matterhorn on a clear day. There are multiple hiking options appropriate for children. >>> See my detailed post here.

2. Zermatt: Rothorn Flower Trail

Lovely ramble over rocky hills and through flower filled fields ending at the Sunnegga Paradise adventure playground and picnic area with a view of the Matterhorn.
>>> See my detailed post here.

3. Riederalp Aletsch Glacier

Cable car to the top where you have a great view of the fantastic Aletsch glacier. There is a short and easy panorama path, great for little ones. Back in the Riederalp dorf, there’s mini-golf and other amusements to round out the day.
>>> See my detailed post here.

4. Hohsass near Saas Fee

We really like these two hikes accessible from Saas Grund, the small town immediately before you reach the more well-known Saas Fee.
Hohsaas. Cable cars up to glacier. Rocky “18 4000m peak” theme trail. It might be a little challenging for little hikers at first but it’s not too long and it’s worth it.
Hohsi Rundweg. At Kreuzboden (middle station to Hohsaas), big playground and short sensory trail. At the middle station, there is a sensory trail that’s short, easy and fun. One of very favorites.

5. Leukerbad

Beautiful high alpine valley, with thermal baths as the main attraction. Multiple hike options in valley and on surrounding mountains. We had a great time at the thermal baths there.
>>> See my detailed post.

6. Verbier

At the far western end of the Valais valley, Verbier is well known as a ski resort, but it is great in summer too. We enjoyed the Bisse du Levron walk along the ancient irrigation canal, one of the many “Bisse” walks in the Valais.
>>> See my detailed post here.

7. Sion

Historic town in the Valais valley, with four castles, including the charming ruins of Tourbillion. See official website.

8. Rainy day options:

Over the two weeks, we had three full days of rain and a few partially rainy days. Swimming at the thermal baths was our best option. We particularly liked Brigerbad in the main Valais valley, near Brig. We also went bowling at Fun Planet in Brig.
