Cardada is a mountain resort above Locarno, with a fun theme trail for children and sweeping panoramic views over Lago Maggiore. It was a little hazy that day so we didn’t get the big views, but we still had fun and hope to go back.

By transit: Take a train to Locarno. Then take a bus to Orselina, Stazione Funivia, or the funicular up to Madonna del Sasso, which is adjacent to the Orselina cable car.
At Orselina there is a lovely church called Madonna del Sasso, pictured below.
From Orselina, you take a cable car to Cardada. You can take a short detour here to the “landscape promontory,” a long ramp built out from the mountain that gives a nice view. There is also a theme trail for children, the Squirrel Path, which has a variety of play equipment.
Then a short walk to the Cimetta chair lift, which takes you to the top. From Cimetta Bergstation, there’s a short walk to the panaromic viewpoint and geological station.
We ate the Restaurant Colmanicchio, which was pretty yummy, had a small playground and had a great view. Also, it had tons of lizards scampering on the terrace, which provided endless entertainment for our 3yr old.
